Jonathan Capehart Reveals Truth and An Important Message Behind the Michael Brown Shooting

March 20, 2015
This Monday, The Washington Post's opinion writer and GUILD speaker, Jonathan Capehart, wrote what he described as "the hardest piece I've had to write."

In reaction to The Justice Department's report on the shooting of Michael Brown, released this month, Capehart writes the uncomfortable truth behind Brown's shooting, revealing that Brown, in fact, did not surrender with his hands up, and Wilson was justified in shooting him.

Yet, he also highlights the deeper message behind the facts. Capehart writes "In fact, the false Ferguson narrative stuck because of concern over a distressing pattern of other police killings of unarmed African American men and boys around the time of Brown's death." Despite the fact that Michael Brown's shooting was based on a false narrative, this incident addressed a key issue: the lack of trust between African Americans and law authorities, giving a voice to minorities that have been victims of racially-charged police interventions.
